Don't you just love it when things you own come with a back story? No, I am not going to tell you a long boring tale. I just want to show you my lovely mini bag - Hidesign Elle in Midnight Blue.

OK.

You guessed it right. I am going to tell you a story...but, it will be a short one. 😊

Why leather? For past couple of years, I am trying my best to stay away from PU bags as they peel. It does not matter which brand you buy, how much you pay for them, they peel. I have spent a good fortune on them before the truth hit me the hard way. They hardly last one solid year then you have to throw them away, and they just end up in a landfill somewhere. Leather takes around 50 years to decompose, but these vegan leather/PU/plastics takes more than 500 years! So, you are generating more garbage and too which will be on this planet for a very long time.

Another good option is canvas/jute bags. But, they can only do so little. I still use them whenever possible.

My absolute choice - leather. And I am very choosy about them:

A. They last forever. I do not want to get bored. I have purchased them in the first place only because they last longer.
B. They cost more so, I have to be 100% sure where I put my money. This helps me limit my wardrobe. So, here is what is handbag collection is - A crimson fun satchel (Hidesign Chione), a blue trendy mini (Hidesign Elle), a brown laptop satchel (from Kolkata), an orange tote, a fit all tan hobo (from Vero Moda in 2015), and an Office Black Bag (from Hidesign which has gone for repairs).

Isn't leather cruel? There is a lot of discussion around this topic - good, bad, and ugly. This is one big reason I limit the number of products I need and never follow micro-trends. I stay away from bags which loads of colors, funky textures, ruffles, or patchwork because these trends change quickly. So, I always end up liking something from Hidesign. Also, I do not buy products in leather if a better alternative is present. For example, I might never buy leather binders or notebooks.

Why Hidesign Ellie? As you can see in my collection, I had no small bags. I didn't have any blue bags either. This ticked all the right checkboxes. I was obsessed with it even before I saw it in the store. It was this time last year, and I was living in a place close to Mumbai with zero access to malls. I went to Mumbai for a weekend, but I could not find the perfect piece. Both the pieces available had defects. I felt bad. So, I started second guessing. Anyways, around November I said to my husband - "I am going to Mumbai. I will be buying this, and I will consider this is my Diwali gift." Evey time I feel that I should I not buy something - I buy it and brand it as a gift from other people. So, naturally, aware of this 'thing,' my husband went on and ignored the message. I went to Mumbai International Airport store - three pieces - all with scratches.

Why me?

March'17: Husband goes to for an official visit to Chennai. Being a wanderlust, he made a quick detour to Pondicherry. (Back in Christmas 2010, we made a secret trip to Pondicherry. I had purchased my first Hidesign. That too from their flagship store! It was a simple fuss-free red bi-fold wallet. Unfortunately, It was stolen in 2012 in Kolkata, and I am still sad about it. I will repurchase it if they ever bring back the same design. My husband is aware of how much I miss it, and he still checks for that wallet at stores.) So, he asked me if I wanted anything from Pondicherry and I said - Ellie in Midnight Blue from their flagship store. He reached the store when it was about to close and luckily they had one left for me. There was no time to check. Thankfully, no defects in this one.

Does this mini bag fit anything? The main compartment even fit my Sony A5500 mirrorless camera! There is still room left for my phone. I also throw in lipstick and eyeliner. There are a slip and a zip pouch inside which I use to carry higher denomination notes and cards which are not used frequently. There is a flip pouch with tassels which holds my keys. The back has a slip pocket for change and metro card.

The color and design stand out. I have worn it with jeans as well as sarees.

When so much goes into one bag, you make sure that they are perfect and irreplaceable. I do not consider just the looks. A lot goes into the screening process. One reason why I have been searching for a back pack since 2013 and haven't been able to land on one. 😊

Price: Rs 2995. But, post-GST the price has hiked to Rs 3225.

Do let me know which brands you prefer for bags.

Love,
Shayoni
