Japakusum Ayurvedic Scalp Lotion: Anti-Hairfall Superhero

Japakusum Ayurvedic Scalp Lotion Review
Japakusum Ayurvedic Scalp Lotion Review

If you have read some of my recent posts, then you might have been aware that I was suffering from acute hair loss. I have never faced something like this in my life. I could see my hair falling everywhere. When I would get up from a seat and even on pillows, I could see a lot of my hair. It was heart-breaking. Initially, I was trying to ignore it, and I even stopped combing my hair. For curvy-wavy hair, it is tough to know if hair is combed or not. I used to ask my Mom to comb my hair. At the beginning of August, I could not take it anymore and had to visit a doctor.

What went wrong? (Most possible cases)
  • My body was recovering from an ill-functioning liver and hair fall is something I should be prepared for. This is what the doctor mentioned.
  • In my attempt to declutter my wardrobe, I was finishing all the random shampoos I had got from gift boxes or beauty boxes. I stopped using my favorite The Body Shop Rainforest Shampoo and even used SLS shampoo at times (sigh). I am not 100% sure about this tough.
  • I ignored the first signs and acted on them late. Should have started much earlier.

What I am doing and how that is helping?
  • My doctor prescribed Vit E capsules, Vit B syrup, and Udiliv (Ursodesoxycholic Acid) capsules. I was taking them earlier, and they helped a lot. I stopped using them as my course was over. The doctor has now decreased the dosage but asked me to continue. But, I am taking them only once instead of twice a day. It helps me in my overall health, but I am not sure if they are doing. Also, they take some time to show effect. (Note: The doctor who prescribed me knows my health history and my needs. Do not take such medications without any consultation).
  • The doctor also prescribed scalp ointments to fight infections. He also told me to avoid oiling as that can make my hair heavy and my roots loose because overwatering your plants during monsoons does harm than good. The ointment showed overnight results but things were back the way they were in 3 days.
  • I stopped combing. I comb my hair when absolutely necessary. Having curvy-wavy hair helps. Also, absolutely no combing when my hair is wet. I detangle my hair with my fingers and tie them loosely to avoid getting them tangled.
  • No heat equipment, no styling products, no serum. The reason is self-explanatory.
  • In mid-August, just before going to Bali, I chopped off 10 inches of my hair. It was heart-breaking. But, it had to be done. Chopping off hair, helped a lot because my hair is tangle free most of the time and also, the stress on my roots reduced which was also beneficial. (My previous haircut was in mid-July at Geetanjali at Malls of India, Noida. It was horrible. So, getting a proper haircut felt cruel to my hair but at least I was sure that it is going to get better.
  • From the first week of September, I started using Apple Cider Vinegar as a rinse. Yes, I know I should have started it earlier. A friend from Mumbai got it for me. From the first wash, I could see volume in my hair. I am not sure if it helped in regrowth, but it did help me in getting some volume. My crown area appears fuller now.
  • Now the crème de la crème – Japakusum Hair Tonic. The one that helped me get zero hair fall. Yes, I am serious. From an animal infected with a serious hair fall diseases now, I am down to hardly 3-5 hairs a day. Almost unbelievable right?

What is Japakusum Hair Tonic?

Japakusum is Hibiscus, Henna, Bhringaraj (maka) and Indian Gooseberry (Amla), and Aloe Vera in water miscible gel base. How can it not work? Just look a the ingredients. As per the bottle, it is a therapeutic product.

Price: Rs 260 for 200ml. Smaller sizes are also available but go for the bigger one. One 200ml bottle is enough for 1.5 to 2-month use.

How to Apply? The label says that the lotion is prescribed it be used on scalp every day for the first 15 days and then once a week. It can be washed off after an hour, but I kept it overnight. I applied it at night before going to sleep. Around two-three coin size amount is enough to cover entire scalp. Let it dry before you sleep as the henna in the lotion can stain your pillows. I do not wash it off in the morning so that it forms a barrier and saves my scalp from pollution. I washed it with plain water at the end of the day. I used shampoo only when absolutely needed.

As the lotion has no oil, it does not feel sticky or oily. It has a good scent as well (from Hibiscus) so, it was not a big issue to keep it on my scalp when I went to work. Your hair will definitely not look great but think like this - it is a medicine and your hair needs the treatment.

Effects: From the very first moment you apply, you can feel the cooling effect on your scalp. It was soothing for my scalp. Also, the other ingredients are great for hair so, I applied some on my hair as well.

After the 5th day of use, I woke up with zero hair on my pillow. I was over the moon at that moment. After ten days, I started to suspect that maybe my medicines are finally kicking in. I stopped it after 14 days, and in two or three days I could again see 2-3 hair on my pillow. I freaked, and now,  I have started the treatment again. I am using it on alternative days instead of everyday.

One weekend, I also used it as a mask to help it work better, but I do not think it did much good. It was just waste of good product :D Looking at the ingredients; I never had a shadow of doubt that it won't work, but I never expected such great results.

Additional Things:
  • As I was adamant on not shampooing my hair frequently, I used a scarf to cover my hair every time I stepped out.
  • I was using the Palmer's Coconut Shampoo. It didn't cause any issue as it is gentle. It got over, and now I am using Bali Balance Coconut Rosemary Shampoo. (I asked my Mom to send the TBS one, but she sent this one).
  • I also switched to banana clips from last week instead of using elastic hair bands. Banana clips give less stress to the hair roots, especially crown area.

Hair Regrowth after using Japakusum

Results: The left image was taken on 11th September just before I first used Japakusum and the right image is taken on 22nd October. You can see that the regrowth around the crown, the new baby hair along the hairline and the shrinking hair partition. I will put another update after three months of use.

Overall: Whether you are facing acute hair fall or just wish to have better hair, I highly recommend Japakusum Ayurvedic Scalp Lotion. The product is completely natural and has only a few handful but powerful ingredients. Also, it is priced very low for what it does. The only issue is availability. But, if you stay in Bombay then you can stop it easily at good pharmacy stores. It is also available online.

Buy it now, use it, and thank me later :D

Love,
Shayoni
