The Symbol of Art & Culture in Cultural Capital of India - Visit to Nandan

Just before leaving Kolkata, I could find no other post better than this. Nandan.

Nandan - the symbol of art and culture in the the cultural capital of India. A place that started in 1985 sharing its site with in Rabindra Sadan complex with the Rabindra Sadan stage. Inaugurated by Satyajit Ray and the logo was also designed by the man himself.

Other than the Rabindra Sadan stage, the Nandan cinema and cultural complex place is near to all the other important cultural places of Kolkata like Academy of Fine Arts, Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi, Gaganendra Prodorshonshala.

The place is sponsored by the govt to facilitates awareness about flims. It still shows 3 shows in a day ( 1400, 1600, 1830 Hrs) and has a seating capacity of more than 1000 people. The tickets ranges from 30, 50 and 70 INR but don't be afraid that the crowd won't be good. The young and the aged who visit this placed are generally those whose offices are around this place and the offices are to be frank either some cultural place or have people who are culturally inclined. The other class of people that can be spotted are those who comes to watch theater shows in Rabindra Sadan. I have spotted 3 TV stars (even talked to them as they were very polite) and 1 person from Bangla band (but this is not 100% sure as I just caught a side glimpse) in just 2 visits to the place.

Check out the people under the trees waiting for the next show.

Its a place of lot of addas, jhal-muri and cha  ( gossip, spiced puffed rice and tea). I do not drink tea but the smell of the lemon tea tempted me to hell. I ended up having a tiny sip.

After all my visit to Kolkata these 2 visits were my first time at this place and I do not know how but I was really touched. This place holds a very special place in my heart now and will definitely visit this place next time I come back.

And now the people I will miss the most - the evening snacks sellers -  muri beguni, phuchka (specially the phucka wala at Garia-Gariahat Auto Stand), veg chops and other yum yums.....this statement is little bit hard to understand unless you have lived in Kolkata for sometime....

If you are in Kolkata enjoy the snacks until I return
and then we will visit Nandan for a movie.....*big smile*

  1. I watched Avatar 2D there for the first time in just Rs.50 *beat that* and the ambience inside, the screen and the seats can give any multiplex a run for their money :D
